There’s an Italian word—sprezzatura—that describes a certain effortless sophistication, the art of easy elegance. The aesthetic of old-world European romance conjures such a balance, where a stylish scene might seemingly emerge organically from the landscape, nothing overthought or overdone. Such was the inspiration for West Coast photographer Alex Warschauer and Lowcountry planner SLP Events when they collaborated on this thoughtfully styled shoot at Middleton Place.

Set among the estate’s grazing sheep and moss-clad oaks, the afternoon delighted in its understated regality. Anchored by a dreamy palette of lavender, blush, and dusty blue, Festoon Charleston gathered clematis, hyacinth, sweet peas, ranunculus, and eucalyptus into wispy, ethereal arrangements. The blooms brought a touch of color to a natural wood table, otherwise dressed simply with a patterned runner and crisp place settings. From a blush coupe Champagne tower stacked atop draped linens to deckled-edge invitations with delicate script by Elephant Limbo, every element was soaked in romance.

Recreating Old-World Romance

Set a Soft Tone. Muted, neutral hues and dusty pastels will not only photograph well, they will always form a classic palette.

Let it Breathe. The beauty of event styling begins with the setting, says Warschauer. Consider your space and make arrangements accordingly. “You don’t want it to feel crammed; you want it to breathe,” he says.

Blend Old with New. Offsetting classic choices, like a timeless tuxedo and throwback coupe glasses, with an unexpected modern element (here, a high-low bridal gown) will undoubtedly make your celebration fresh and unique. Don’t be afraid to mix it up!

A Case for Formalities. Though not commonplace, Warschauer recommends couples consider bringing in a backdrop on their big day to capture formal photos. “It creates an opportunity to make art on your wedding day,” he says. Plus, you might appreciate stepping away to savor a few quiet moments with your new spouse.
