Midsummer Magic | Love colorful blooms and otherworldly touches? So does this bride, who said "I do" in a waterfront plantation ceremony

July 2, 2017 / Lowndes Grove Plantation

For Scott’s 30th birthday, Meg splurged on tickets to Berlin, Vienna, and Prague for her and her beau. Scott returned the favor (and then some) by capping off their tour with a proposal. For the Big Day, the New Yorkers headed to Charleston's Lowndes Grove Plantation for its Old World charm and a celebration that English lit teacher Meg says was centered around “eating and laughing with those you love.” Intrigue Design & Events crafted a stylish fête where travel, food, and wine took front and center. With boxwood chargers, voluminous garden florals, wine bottles as table numbers, and Portugal-inspired blue-tinted glasses, the bride’s hoped for Euro garden party meets “Midsummer Night’s Dream” ambiance reigned over the waterfront site, casting its spell over the happy couple and their guests alike.

Top Tips

• Honor your customs. In Hawaii, where Megan grew up, wearing a bloom on the left side says, “Sorry, boys. I’m spoken for.”

• Take a cue from your gown. Here, the gold-leafed cake echoed Megan’s gold-embossed gown.

• Pay attention to the small things. Megan’s sapphire engagement ring inspired the navy blue invitation suite and the wedding party’s attire.

• Don’t be shy about a strong palette. “Place pops of color where they will be impactful and use greenery to balance those out,” says Chelsye Harp of Intrigue Design & Events.

• Get trivial. To ramp up the fun, Scott had silly facts about him and Megan printed on paper napkins.

• Pair faux and for-real greens and blooms. Faux moss placemats were topped with menus and fresh springs of real lavender. Lesson: Sometimes pairing real and faux flora works.
