When Elizabeth Hunter and Klas Persson began planning their October 10, 2009 wedding, their top priority was to make sure that it celebrated the unique things that set them apart as a couple. (While they in Charlotte, Elizabeth is originally from West Virginia and Klas hails from Sweden.) After selecting Kiawah Island for the wedding weekend—it’s where Klas first told Elizabeth he loved her and where he proposed a year later—they picked the Ocean Course Clubhouse for the ceremony and reception.

When guests arrived at the island, they were welcomed with goodie bags assembled by the couple. Treats included West Virginia chocolates and Swedish candies, along with a letter penned by Elizabeth and Klas. The all-American rehearsal dinner introduced guests to BBQ and beach music, but Swedes had the chance to school Americans during the reception, where they led a rousing version of the “Schnapps Song” followed, of course, by a shot of the drink.

“All in all, these special touches helped to make guests from both countries feel at ease with one another and quickly learn about each other’s special customs,” says Elizabeth.
