At Last | Wedgewood blue lent these nuptials a nautical flair
Alexandra Abington & Gordon Stewart
October 15, 2021 / Lowndes Grove

There were supposed to be three weddings in Gordon Stewart’s family in 2020: his own to Alex Abington, as well as summer weddings for his two sisters Charlotte and Lizzie. The pandemic made wedding rescheduling pros out of them all, and when Alex and Gordon’s day finally arrived on October 15, 2021, it was well worth the wait.

The New York couple chose Charleston for their wedding over contenders including Nantucket and Alex’s home town of Washington, DC. “The food, the people, the charm of the neighborhoods, and the different pace of life from New York all formed the foundation of our love for this city,” says Alex. They chose Lowndes Grove, with an outdoor ceremony on the front lawn followed by a reception at sunset and dinner in the venue’s river-view pavilion.

The couple’s direction to their planner Amanda of A Charleston Bride was “clean and classic with a touch of nautical to play on the setting,” says Alex. Wedgewood blue lent unity to many elements of the wedding, from the invitations to the linens, table settings, and bridesmaids’ gowns. Despite the delay, it seems the stars aligned to offer the couple the perfect wedding day, a mild temperature, clear October skies, and a golden sunset. Says Alex, “It was truly magical.”

Tips

• Reconsider Saturday. Although it was not their first choice, getting married on Friday instead of Saturday gave the couple lots of “bonus time” with their guests all day and night Saturday, says Alex.
• Have a vision or inspiration.  But trust the professionals to bring it to life. And then, don’t sweat the small stuff.
• Put Your Phone Down. Instead, soak in the moments with your family, friends, and especially your future spouse.
