In Japan, a long-standing wedding custom challenges engaged couples to fold 1,001 origami cranes together, the idea being that they will both learn patience and be gifted with 1,000 years of prosperity. David Wicke (whose mother is Japanese) shared the idea with Angela Burney not long after proposing, and the two embarked on a five-month fold-fest. “By the 500th crane,” says Angela, “our patience was definitely being tested!” The James Island residents opted for gold birds, as they had chosen McCrady’s for their wedding and were smitten with the golden antique sconces in the restaurant’s Long Room. Angela imagined how the warm shade would play out against the room’s exposed bricks and beams and called in Mingle’s Megan Morgan Finne to fine-tune the vision. “When brides want to incorporate gold,” says Megan, who worked in navy and white pieces, too, “I like to make a big impact without relying on it as the main color.” And the cranes? Suspended from chandeliers, perched on tables, and hidden in floral arrangements, they made the glowing evening “a true reflection of ourselves,” says Angela.
