Abby & Greg | Historic Rice Mill

Their story plays out like a romantic movie. We will title scene one “Young Love.” 10-year-old Abby holds hands with her cousin’s friend, 10-year-old Greg, on the couch. Scene Two “Grown Up.” After a decade of not seeing each other, Abby’s cousin throws a graduation party … and lo and behold, there’s Greg. Scene three, “Night Shift.” Greg, the EMT, and Abby, the CNA, work the night shift, so their schedules line up magically and the spark grows as they just happen to be two very few people wide awake at 4 a.m. Scene Four, “Long Distance.” For three years, Abby works as a physician assistant in Hilton Head, South Carolina, while Greg finishes Air Force pilot training all over the United States. They keep the flame burning until they both land in Charleston. Scene 5, and our last scene (well, for now), we shall title “Marry Me.” Cue the song lyrics by Train. Greg knows Abby has an affinity for beautiful trees, so he takes her to the famous Angel Oak on Johns Island and asks her to be his wife …

… which all brings the happy couple to The Historic Rice Mill to tie the knot. Abby and Greg loved the venue’s exposed brick, and the lookout over the water fit in perfectly with their Southern Tropical theme—bright florals, tropical greenery, and pineapple boutonnieres (oh-so Charleston) included. Family and friends spent the day before the wedding on the Palmetto Breeze sailboat in resort wear, so everyone was in already tropical mode come reception time. Two unique and thoughtful elements rounded out the event: a donation to Lowcountry Lab Rescue in lieu of favors and a mother/son dance for all in attendance since the Big Day landed on Mother’s Day. Take a closer look at Scene 6 “I Do” through photographer Dana Cubbage’s captures below.
