On a visit to Charleston to see family, Brett, a policy advisor from California, met Mary, an attorney, through a mutual connection. They remained friends and began dating when he permanently relocated to the Lowcountry in January 2016. Eight months later, he proposed at Waterfront Park after lunch at Cru Café.
