“Brunch is practically a cultural institution where we live,” says Alyssa Lapan. “Some of our happiest weekends revolve around long brunches with friends.” That’s how she and fiancé Joseph Rice landed on a brunch wedding at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens last June, prompted by Joe’s Lowcountry roots. The D.C. residents enlisted Alicia Brewer of Duvall to execute all moving parts of their 60-person destination wedding, including planning, design, flowers, and catering.

As the couple got engaged on a New Zealand trip that included a tour of the Lord of the Rings Hobbiton set, subtle elements from the film were woven into the day.
