Airy florals, moss-draped oaks, and sprawling string lights on the grounds of the 19th-century Legare Waring House made for an unforgettable alfresco affair celebrating two local lovebirds. A wedding pro herself, the bride credited planner Parte Events & Design for pulling it all off: “Someone recently asked me what I would change if I got the chance, and honestly nothing came to mind.”

When Ty asked Rachel to marry him, they knew there was no better place than their hometown to host guests from near and far (Ty’s family is from England). It didn’t take long to settle on Legare Waring House for the setting, or to select Anna Kate Sherrill with Parte Events & Design to help plan. What they didn’t anticipate was that the pandemic would delay the day by a year. “But having a skilled planner made all the difference,” recalls the bride.

For the wedding, they went for a Lowcountry-meets-English-countryside look, using neutrals, pale green, and dusty blue, a delicate hue that came through in the bridesmaids’ gowns, the bride’s fantastic floral heels, and in the wavy-patterned linens. The couple took great care to honor the bride’s late mother and groom’s late father, celebrating them in toasts, speeches, and a fresh bouquet of the mother-of-the-bride’s favorite flowers laid on a reserved ceremony seat. They also personalized many of the details, passing Yorkshire pudding in honor of the groom, incorporating Queen Anne’s lace into the airy florals (a nostalgic favorite of the bride), and offering customized Coca-Colas emblazoned with “Share a Coke with the Hickens” to accompany their late-night snacks. It was a clean, fresh, and timeless affair that played out under the stunning allee of oaks and a canopy of string lights.

Top Tips

• Love your backup plan. Planner Anna Kate Sherrill notes that spring weather in Charleston can be unpredictable, so while she always wants to shoot for the moon and hopes for no rain, she encourages her couples to love their plan B, just in case.

• Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. The couple enjoys working out, and Rachel is a fitness instructor, but she’ll never turn down a Coca-Cola, so the customized sodas were a fun and personal touch.
