Despite both being raised in the small city of Roxboro, North Carolina, Taylor Puryear and Douglas Weaver never crossed paths growing up. Ironically, their families had been linked for decades: Doug’s father helped Taylor’s family secure a loan for their business—where she now works as CFO—some 30 years ago. The two finally met when he stopped by the office to deliver a case of his family’s Papa Good Foot barbecue sauce, and the connection was instantaneous.

On their first date, Doug took Taylor to a cabin that he’d recently purchased on several acres of land. She remembers leaving with an overwhelming feeling that they were meant to be. “People always told me that when you meet the right person, you’ll simply know. And I truly did,” she says. Four years later, he took her back to the cabin—after transforming the back porch with drapes, roses, and candles—to ask for her hand in marriage.

The couple set their sights on a Lowcountry wedding, seeking a charming, romantic setting for their September nuptials. Envisioning a soft, minimalist aesthetic inspired by the candlelit wedding of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, the pair teamed up with planner Haley Kelly to bathe The Dunlin in pure romance.

Following a marshfront ceremony along the Kiawah River, guests moved inside the Shippon reception hall, where the lofty space was fully draped and illuminated by the ethereal glow of more than 1,500 lighted candles. The bride, who also works as a personal stylist, requested an all-black dress code for their guests, knowing it would create an instantly chic contrast against the setting’s winding oak limbs and sweeping marsh vistas. “We wanted every detail to feel intentional, but never overdone,” says Taylor.

A spirit of surprise carried the day. Though the couple had originally opted out of a first look, Taylor snuck up behind Doug during pre-ceremony portraits for a special reveal that delighted everyone looking on—from their wedding party to their vendors. And as the night unfolded, chic elegance seamlessly gave way to unbridled fun: a lively after-party where the newlyweds surprised their 150 guests with a mechanical bull, proving that even the most sophisticated celebrations are best capped with a dose of playfulness.
