Matt Sherrier & Bailey Clark

February 21, 2015

When Hurricane Hanna swept up the Eastern Seaboard in 2008, College of Charleston classes were canceled and “hurricane parties” popped up across campus. At one such fête, Mount Pleasant native Bailey Clark—a rising junior and member of CofC’s Swimming & Diving Program—met Matt Sherrier, also a CofC swimmer and rising freshman. “I played hard to get, well aware of Matt's younger age and slightly cocky attitude,” says Bailey, “but we couldn't stay away from each other. We fell in love that night, and the rest is history.” More than six years later, the couple made plans to visit the Angel Oak—a local daytrip that had long been on their to-do list. When they arrived, Matt handed Bailey a thick scrapbook that contained each and every memento from throughout their courtship, from movie stubs and concert tickets to love notes, letters, and sketches. After poring through the book, Bailey looked up to find Matt on bended knee in front of the towering tree. Following her ecstatic “Yes!” the pair enjoyed dinner at Angel Oak Restaurant, then headed downtown to Palmetto Brewery, where Bailey’s brother works and both families were awaiting to surprise the couple and celebrate. On November 5, 2016, they will marry at Boone Hall Plantation.
